Many of us have fond childhood memories of a special cuckoo clock, possibly at a grandparent's house, or even in our own. Who doesn't remember the feeling of delight when that sweet, beguiling little bird would appear and fill the room with its song? Even though many people have cuckoo clocks as treasured keepsakes, the history of these superb clocks is usually unknown. It is a wealthy and fascinating history and is worth exploring. "Time is gold" as the saying goes and so are clocks like the Vintage Big Ben you are going to see on this page. The value of time imprinted on the clocks created.
The very first version of the well-known clock as we know it nowadays was produced around 1738 by Franz Anton Ketterer, from the village of Sch?nwald near Triberg. It's thought that he was inspired by both the cry of a rooster and other clocks decorated with scenes of farm life, but discovered the sound of the cuckoo bird less complicated to produce than the rooster's crow. Germany already had a lengthy history of fine clock-making prior to the Cuckoo Clock came on the scene. Artisans had been making ornate clocks entirely by hand, such as all of the gears and moving parts inside and also the casing and decorations. The first Cuckoo Clock and those following inside the early years of production had been also made entirely by hand. Later, the use of metal parts plus the incorporation of the pendulum provided a lot more accurate timekeeping. A pendulum clock has a weight at the end that, when swinging, swings back and forth at the exact same rate all the time and moves the gears continuously. Little weights hanging from under the clock, typically inside the shape of pinecones on a Cuckoo Clock, are pulled on a typical basis to continue the pendulum's swing and keep accurate time. The mechanism that makes the clock go "coo-coo" is still used right now: bellows that push air via small pipes, similar to how a pipe organ works. "Time is gold" as the saying goes and so are clocks like the Vintage Big Ben you are going to see on this page. The value of time imprinted on the clocks developed.

Where can I buy pictures or paintings of London?
I've always had this passionate fascination with Europe, particularly London. I'm redoing my room and want to include classic paintings/pictures of London and other places in Europe. Maybe paintings of Big Ben, double decker buses, opera houses, or the classic red telephone booth. I want a very sophisticated look to the pictures and not just some picture someone snapped on their iphones. Does anyone know a website or place where I can find these? Also, what other London-type, vintage influences can I include other than the pictures? I have a beautiful wall mirror that is black and white Paris themed. It has a stunning painting of a fashion woman in a sort of perfume ad. Other ideas/advice? Thanks!!!
I love your ideas and going with Europe; I have the same theme throughout my living room; I call it "travel" so I have black & white pic of Paris, 4 items from NY (you are particular to London... I heart NYC!) And then I also have long pciture of Big Ben, with a phone booth in the foreground. It has a title on it called "London Calling" funny I know, with the phone booth in the front! Plus I love the Clash and the song of theirs by the same name. It's bright colors, but an evening pic, so it's a bit thought provoking. Surprisingly, I think I found it at Michael's craft store. THey do framing there, so there's a poster section right near it. This poster is 36 inches by 12 inches across. I put it on a small wall space between a corner and a window. I also find lots of stuff I like on art.com, and I would sign up with a user id and passwd, because they email me 25% off or free shipping deals. And they aren't that expensive. Check there or at bed bath & beyond, or any other local poster/art store at your local mall. Good luck!
